Hi! I’m Mira, a 3rd year Film Practice student and student ambassador for UAL.
I’m running for student communities officer because I want to build a community in UAL where people feel they belong. Societies and campaigns are not just a way we find community but a way to shape the culture of the university and push for change, on campus and beyond. From sports clubs to political campaigns, they get people together and create unity between different campuses.
I've been an activist and organiser for years now. I was one of the organisers of Bologna pride 2017-2019, and I’m currently a Changemaker at LCC, working on decolonising the curriculum and making the university more inclusive. As a gay Arab woman, a diverse, inclusive and vibrant campus is important to me. I want to bring my experience to this role and help build a better university for everyone.
My priority is amplifying the voices of students and representing your needs in the best way possible. I love talking to people and discussing different issues, I’ll always be happy to listen and help you achieve your goals!
I currently work for the SU cafeteria and bar and through this job I’ve got to know a huge number of students. One thing they often ask me is why prices are so much cheaper in the SU cafes than the ones run by UAL - they don’t have to be! As part of the existing campaign to help students with the cost of living, I will push for cheaper prices by bringing all catering services in-house instead of running them for profit.
My priorities:
-
Build the cost of living campaign and fight for cheaper prices in campus facilities.
-
More inclusive societies, and schemes to make sure they are affordable.
-
Amplify existing liberation campaigns and help start new campaigns for LGBT liberation, feminism, antiracism, and disability justice.
-
Find ways to reach students who don’t feel represented and give them a voice.
-
Give students more access to spaces to put on whatever kind of events they want!
VOTE MIRA #1 AS STUDENT COMMUNITIES OFFICER!
