Arts SU Elections 2023

Arts Students' Union is an independent democratic organisation (charity) led by our 22,000 members through our elections and referendums. Every UAL student has the right to participate and vote in our elections to determine who represents them and what direction the organisation takes through the priorities of its elected leaders. Your Students’ Union holds annual elections to allow you to choose your student leaders for the next academic year. There are six Full-Time Elected Officers (also Sabbatical Trustees) who will work on a full-time basis, taking a break from their studies or immediately after graduation and twenty-four Part-Time School Representatives who will work on a voluntary basis alongside their ongoing studies.

Chelsea, Camberwell & Wimbledon (CCW) Officer

College Officers are paid representatives who carry out their role after, or by taking a year out of, their studies to make positive changes for students. The Chelsea, Camberwell & Wimbledon (CCW) College Officer is the lead representative of the Students’ Union and CCW students. They work with staff and students including school and course reps to represent students and coordinate vibrant and engaging priorities or campaigns based on students' views and interests.

They attend College Academic Committees, where you will champion the views of students in CCW. You will also play a role in steering the direction of Arts SU by attending Trustee Board, as well as chairing Student and Dean Forums, attended by CCW reps.

These positions are taken up at the beginning of July for the duration of the following academic year (2023/2024). College Officers are supported and trained by the Arts SU team, starting with a two-week induction period in July.

Key Responsibilities:

Student Communities Officer

The Student Communities Officer is a paid representative who carries out their role after, or by taking a year out of, their studies to make positive changes for students. The Student Communities Officer is the lead representative of the various student communities at UAL, including sports, societies, study, liberation, and personal identity. They work with staff, officers and students to represent and make positive changes for sport/society committees, school reps, and

Student Communities Officer will attend various University committees to ensure the continued support, representation and development of the different student communities at UAL. They will also play a role in steering the direction of Arts SU by attending Trustee Board.

These positions are taken up at the beginning of July for the duration of the following academic year (2023/2024). The Student Communities Officer is supported and trained by the Arts SU team, starting with a two-week induction period in July.

Union Affairs Officer

The Union Affairs Officer is a paid representative who carries out their role after, or by taking a year out of, their studies to make positive changes for students. The Union Affairs Officer is the lead representative of all UAL students on central University issues. They work with Arts SU, fellow Elected Officers, students, university staff and external organisations to represent students, review key student issues and lead vibrant and engaging priorities and campaigns

They lead on the development of Arts SU activities, facilities and services to ensure these are accessible for all UAL students, as well as supporting the democratic work of Arts SU, encouraging students to engage with decision making processes, including elections, all-student forums, annual member meetings, and the online ideas platform.

This includes being the key liaison with the central University, attending various university committees, including the University Board of Governors where they attend as a Student Governor to champion the views of students at UAL, develop a positive working relationship with the University, and updating on the work of other Elected Officers. You will also play a role in steering the direction of Arts SU by Chairing Trustee Board.

These positions are taken up at the beginning of July for the duration of the following academic year (2023/2024). College Officers are supported and trained by the Arts SU team, starting with a two-week induction period in July.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Gather and represent the views, ideas and experiences of students at UAL on university-wide matters including communication, library services, student support, and other central services to improve the student experiences.
  • Leads priorities and/or campaigns based on the needs of all students at UAL, and support Arts SU campaigns.
  • Attends and actively engages in meetings, including the University Board of Governors, its relevant subcommittees, and holds and attends other University meetings as appropriate.
  • Works with Arts SU to shape their work on liberation, equity, diversity, and inclusion, as well as the organisational strategic priorities.
  • Oversees the direction, finances, staff and governance of the organisation at Trustee Board meetings in your role as an Arts SU Trustee.
  • Act as the first point of contact with the National Union of Students and other stakeholders as required.
  • Supports key Arts SU events and campaigns such as Welcome Week, Elections, Exhibit, and Liberation Events including Black History Month, LGBTQ+ History Month, International Women’s Day, and more.

They work with fellow school and course reps, the CCW College Officer, and university staff to make positive change for students. This includes attending Boards of Study meetings, Student and Dean Forums and other University meetings as appropriate to champion the views of their school/department and close the feedback loop.

The CCW Art School Reps are volunteers who carries out their roles alongside their studies and get to join our growing community of student representatives. There are x2 of these roles available.

These positions are taken up for the duration of the following academic year (2023/2024). All School Reps are supported and trained by the Arts SU Representation & Democracy Team, and have the opportunity to meet and network with other students, and to attend rep socials throughout the year.

All successful School Rep candidates will start their role upon completing the School Rep training on the 8th November (1:30 PM - 5:30 PM) provided by Arts SU to help them be effective in their roles.   • 2-3 hours a week during term time (inclusive of boards of study meetings x3, Student &Dean Forums as well as regular catch-ups with Arts SU and School staff). 

  • Represent the views and interests of students in your school/department. 

  • Work with school/department team to improve the student experience. 

  • Act as an intermediary between Arts SU, the University and course reps. 

  • Attend meetings (Boards of Study as well as Student and Dean Forums) to raise feedback submitted by students. 

  • Provide constructive feedback on the wider student experience within your school/department. 

  • Signpost students needing support to relevant support services, run by the University or Arts SU.

School Rep: LCF ¦ Design & Technology (2 places)

The LCF Design and Technology School Reps represent students on courses in the LCF Design & Technology School on everything effecting students' academic experience. They work with fellow school and course reps, the LCF College Officer, and university staff to make positive change for students. This includes attending Boards of Study meetings, Student and Dean Forums and other University meetings to champion the views of their school/department and close the feedback loop.

The LCF Design & Technology School Reps are volunteers who carry out their roles alongside their studies and get to join our growing community of student representatives. There are x2 of these roles available. 

These positions are taken up for the duration of the following academic year (2023/2024). All School Reps are supported and trained by the Arts SU Representation & Democracy Team, and have the opportunity to meet and network with other students, and to attend rep socials throughout the year. 

Only students who study in LCF Design & Technology can stand for this role. You can find out which school your course is in by looking on this list

All successful School Rep candidates will start their role upon completing the School Rep training on the 8th November (1:30 PM - 5:30 PM) provided by Arts SU to help them be effective in their roles. The roles will end on 30th June 2024, but students continuing their studies for the 24-25 academic year can stand again if they wish.

The LCF Fashion Business School Reps represent students in all the courses in the LCF Fashion Business School on everything effecting students' academic experience. They work with fellow school and course reps, the LCF College Officer, and university staff to make positive change for students. This includes attending Boards of Study meetings, Student and Dean Forums and other University meetings as appropriate to champion the views of their school/department and close the feedback loop.

The LCF Fashion Business School Reps are volunteers who carry out their roles alongside their studies and get to join our growing community of student representatives. There are x2 of these roles available. 

These positions are taken up at the beginning of July for the duration of the following academic year (2023/2024). All School Reps are supported and trained by the Arts SU Representation & Democracy Team, and have the opportunity to meet and network with other students, and to attend rep socials throughout the year.

NUS Liberation Conference Rep (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer+)

An NUS Liberation Delegate (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer), will represent students at the University of Arts London nationally by attending and participating in the NUS Liberation Conference (17th & 18th April 2023). They will contribute to the national debate and vote on policy. NUS Liberation Conference brings together activists to build campaigns, make policy and discuss issues affecting students from Liberation groups.

LGBTQ+ NUS Liberation Conference Delegates attend National Union of Students (NUS) Liberation conference to represent all LGBTQ+ students at UAL.

Delegates can raise and take part in discussions, vote on our behalf to decide national policy and elect national representatives.

This conference is an excellent networking opportunity and takes place in person at a conference venue in a city location. The time commitment required is the duration of the conference (including time required to travel to and from the location) as well as a briefing before and debriefing after the conference with Arts SU.

Arts SU covers conference registration fees, accommodation, food and travel for all delegates.
