QUEERCIRCLE x Arts SU Every Possible World: a series of workshops on facilitation and community building.

For Black Queer Students. As part of Arts SU's Black History Month – Every Tuesday Evening of October

Curious about facilitation, building community and using art to bring people together? Ever had a workshop idea you wanted to bring to life but unsure how? This is for you!

QUEERCIRCLE is an LGBTQ+ led charity working at the intersection of arts, health and social action. Arts SU and QUEERCIRCLE are coming together to deliver a series of workshops, for black queer students, designed to empower you with the knowledge, resources and skillset for facilitating workshops, taking part in participatory arts, and building professional, creative communities within a supportive and accessible setting.

Over four weeks you will learn and develop skills in and around:

workshop ideation and delivery
facilitation & participatory arts
community building
the use of art as a tool to bring people together
how to transfer these skills into your creative practice and career

No experience needed. Just enthusiasm and an idea or desire to facilitate.

The Details

Facilitator Bios:

Maya Uppal (they/them) is a writer, artist and youth programmer working on youth-led projects at Queercircle, an arts and creative health charity based in North Greenwich.

Abi Ogunlokun (she/her) is an artist, facilitator and arts programmer working at Arts SU.

📍 Where: On campus at UAL London College of Communication. These sessions are not available for online attendance.

Join Peckham Digital’s co-director and curator, Bea Taylor Searle, for a guided tour of this year’s exhibition, 'Mediating Behaviours'. Featuring works by 10 artists, the exhibition presents practices selected through an open call by Pita Arreola and Danielle 'Ebonix' Udogaranya, and later curated within the gallery space by Bea.

The curatorial theme 'Mediating Behaviours' emerged after the selection, drawing out connections between the works where they mediate our behaviour towards them and possibly towards each other.

This tour offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the exhibition came together, alongside unique insights into each artwork and the wider conversations they spark about digital art today.

Bea Taylor Searle, the co-founder and co-director of Peckham Digital and a member of SORI Collective (Speaking Out, Reimagining Institutions) – a group of forward-thinking cultural programmers shaping the future of the arts – as part of Southbank Centre Presents. She is also currently pursuing a practice-based PhD at the Centre for the Study of the Networked Image.

About Peckham Digital:
Peckham Digital is a not-for-profit community interest company (CIC) dedicated to making digital art and creative computing more inclusive, accessible, and community-driven. We create opportunities for people to engage with creative technology by supporting emerging artists, nurturing grassroots digital art communities, and encouraging a "hands-dirty" experimental approach to making.

Connecting to your values: a workshop for future student leaders (30/09/2026, 14:00)

This free online workshop will help you connect to your values, develop your confidence and personal voice, and explore what it means to be an effective student leader. It is open to any currently enrolled UAL student and/or Course Rep, whether you’re planning to stand for election as a School Rep this autumn, interested in doing so, or simply keen to develop your leadership skills. You can still attend even if you decide not to stand later on.

When thinking about leadership and representation, it’s tempting to focus on issues to fix, policies to change and problems to solve. But before the solutions, there’s a bigger question: what do you actually stand for?

In this reflective and creative workshop, we’ll explore what students are thinking and feeling right now, drawing on current research from Arts Students’ Union’s Democracy and Influencing Team. We’ll also look at real-world examples of influential people who have used manifestos and personal visions to communicate ideas for change.

You’ll have space to reflect on your own values, experiences and motivations, and explore how these can shape the kind of student leader you want to be. Through group exercises and conversations with other students, you’ll develop your confidence, practise expressing your ideas and consider how research and different perspectives can inform your approach.

The workshop is about finding your voice, identifying what matters to you, and developing the skills and confidence to represent positive change.

Expect:

Research insights: Explore what students are feeling and thinking right now.
Personal reflections: Connect your role as a representative to your own values and experiences.
Group conversation: Share ideas and perspectives with other students in a relaxed, non-competitive space.
Creativity: Experiment with different ways of expressing your manifesto and developing your voice.
An introduction to Autumn Elections: Leave with a clear understanding of how to stand, vote and/or campaign in the Autumn and/or Spring Elections.

'Craft Your Calm: Visual Journal Making Workshop' (01/10/2026, 10:00)

Throughout history, artists have used diaries and journals to support their creative practice and wellbeing.

From random clippings to scribbled notes to unexpected moments of artistic genius, a journal is the perfect way to contain, preserve, and expand your creative practice while supporting your wellbeing at the same time.

In this workshop, you will discover a portion of UAL Archives and Special Collections Centre's vast and inspiring collection of diaries and journals made by creatives in a guided handling session. Then you will have the opportunity to take direct inspiration from what you have seen to create your own visual journal from scratch, expertly facilitated by artist Tasch Von Uexkull, founder of Assemblage Collective.

We will share a simple book-binding technique to create the structure, along with tips to personalise your cover.

Afterwards, we will explore a variety of written and visual prompts alongside an array of collage materials so you can start your journalling journey.

We will provide all the materials you need. However, you are welcome to bring along any of your own materials to personalise your visual diary, such as small artworks, scraps of paper with notes or drawings and other ephemera you might want to include.

You will take home your personalised A5 journal, new connections and lots of tips for continuing your new journalling practice to support both your practice and your personal wellbeing.

This workshop is facilitated by Assemblage Collective in partnership with UAL Archives and Special Collections Centre and supported by Arts SU.

Assemblage Collective is an arts collective based in London specialising in hands-on artistic workshops harnessing papercraft and creativity to bring people together. Assemblage is in residence at the Foundling Museum in London where they host 10 workshops a year for young people aged 18-30, as well as offering a range of other events open to all at different venues across London.

The workshop will be facilitated by Tascha Von Uexkull, founder of Assemblage Collective. Tascha is a creative producer and workshop facilitator, currently working at the Foundling Museum as the Youth & Communities Manager.

Where: This event will take place at the London College of Communication in room T806. All UAL students are welcome to join. Please just bring your UAL ID to enter the building (alternatively, a temporary pass can be requested from the front desk on arrival).

Directions to the room

When you enter the barriers, head straight up the main staircase. At the top of the stairs, turn right towards the canteen. Walk straight through the canteen, at the end of the canteen hall, turn right through the double doors, past the women's toilets and through another set of double doors towards the lifts. Press the lift button, and when it arrives, select floor '8'. When the lift doors open on floor 8, the room will be on the left.

Access:

The space has step-free access. If anyone requires a step-free route to the space, please let us know or notify reception upon arrival. They will take you through the ground-floor café, up a gradual ramp with handrails on either side, and left through a door that opens with their pass, into the elevator lobby. From there, you should be able to call the elevator to the 8th floor, where the room is located. When inside the lift, if the button panel by the door is not at an accessible height, there are lift buttons at a lower level along the right-hand side. Don't worry, other people will be attending on their own as well; this event is open to all UAL students and can be a great opportunity to make more connections!

Creative Wellbeing

This year's programme of events has been created in direct response to the recommendations in the Arts SU report on Creative Burnout, 'Inside the Kiln'. Drawing on focus groups with students from across UAL, the report examines how creative burnout affects students’ ability to generate ideas, experiment, take risks, and remain connected to their creative practice. We hope sessions like this provide students with access to new materials, additional forms of creative self-care and resilience.

Calling all international students...

Submit a design for an A5 notebook cover to be sold in not just a shop from February 2027.  

This competition is open to all current international students studying at the University of the Arts London (UAL).

Are you an International Student?

At UAL, international students are mainly defined as those who need a Student Route visa to study in the UK. This includes students from the EU, EEA, and Switzerland who do not have special status under the EU Settlement Scheme. Because of this, they are usually not seen as home students when it comes to tuition fees.

We know that, unlike home students, the UK government's visa rules mean international students are not allowed to be self-employed (for example, you can not sell your work, or take on paid commissions) during your studies in the UK. However, we're excited to share that international students are able to participate in competitions! To ensure we offer an equal number of opportunities for both home and international students at UAL, we are opening this competition up to international students only. We strongly encourage all International Students, regardless of your course, to apply for this opportunity.

The prize

Up to 2 students will receive:

What we’re looking for?

The notebook cover design could be an existing artwork that can be used as an appealing surface design. This could be a crop of photograph that would suit being made into a commercial design.

Designs should be appealing to the general public and represent the quality, creativity and diversity of UAL. Entries will be assessed on their originality, public appeal and commercial appeal.  

While the final image must be submitted in digital format for a printed notebook, we encourage applications from all disciplines, including, but not limited to, graphic design, communication design, photography, painting, drawing, illustration, sculpture, and animation.  

Our important rules for creating the notebook design are:  

The notebook cover needs to have a front and back incorporated within the design. The notebook will be stapled, so there will be a very narrow spine.
The full notebook cover dimensions are 303 x 216 mm. This includes 148 x 210mm for the A5 front design, 148 x 210mm for the A5 back design and 3mm bleed along the edge of the full design.  
The notebook design should be laid out flat, with the front cover on the right side of the design and the back cover area on the left.  
Key design elements (e.g. text) need to be kept outside the 3mm bleed from the design edge, as this could be trimmed off in production.

We have also included example designs using the template.
The notebook will be digitally printed, saddle-stitched (stapled) with lined interior paper. We will be using Printed.com to produce them.

The selected designs will be produced by not just a shop, and we will need the original Adobe Illustrator, EPS, or TIFF files. Copyright in the design will remain with the creator, but not just a shop will print a limited run of 40 units to sell in-store and online. "All of the proceeds from our retail operations are reinvested back into supporting students and graduates with their businesses through our enterprise learning offer".

Winners will be announced by the end of October 2026.

Keerthana Ambat's Notebook Design
Keerthana’s design was selected as one of the winning designs because it was a bold contemporary pattern that incorporated the feeling of a busy UAL campus, whilst being open enough to be appealing to not just shop customers on the High Holborn high street. The strong use of colour and graphic style felt fresh and would stand out in a busy retail display.
Petra Gana's Notebook Design
Petra’s design stood out during the selection process because it was a very contemporary take on surface design that also had a very strong commercial appeal. It felt uniquely UAL, and I particularly enjoyed the use of colour and the image manipulation that looked like a digital marbling technique.

What is it?

The annual Welcome Fair is your time to discover new communities through the Students’ Union sports clubs and societies. Who can attend?

The Welcome Fair is completely FREE and open to all UAL students - not just new students. Whether you're starting your first year, returning for another, studying at undergraduate or postgraduate level, or based at any UAL college, you're invited.

What’s new this year?

In response to the year-on-year increase in attendees, this year, we’re introducing free tickets so that everyone gets the opportunity to attend and experience the fair in a relaxed and timely manner. No more long waiting indefinitely in the queue. Pick your time slot, turn up and enjoy the fair!

We’ve also extended the event time by two hours to ensure that there is ample time for all who wish to attend. Our quiet hour remains the same (10am – 11am) which is designated as a quiet/access hour for those students who need some additional space and quiet in order to enjoy the event. Music is turned off to help create a more calming environment and we ask students to keep noise levels low. We encourage only those who may prefer this type of visit to book this time slot.

How does the ticketing work?

Tickets are free to book via Eventbrite. Each hour has an allocated number of tickets and once those are all booked, that time slot will no longer be available to book online. Should your preferred time slot be fully booked, please select another time slot.

We understand that some attendees may not be able to stand in the queue for a long period of time and so we advise those students to inform the Students' Union team upon arrival, so that we can accommodate your entrance into the fair. What is the opportunity?

We are looking for proposals from students across UAL to stage an exhibition or try out a project idea in one of Arts SU’s Project Spaces. The three spaces we have to offer students this term are situated at Camberwell College of Art (Peckham Road) and Central Saint Martins.

The Arts SU aims to provide a safe and supportive environment that enriches the student experience and allows for students to learn and develop their creative practice and career. Project Space feeds into this mission by providing free and open spaces for all current students to host projects, learn, create and collaborate.

The Arts SU recognises that for many students, this will be the first time presenting work or accessing an exhibition space. To empower students to make the most of the spaces the Arts SU will supply inductions and learning resources to give students the confidence and skills they need to help realise their projects. We will also provide technician and curatorial support, some financial support, a private view and professional development opportunities.

Who are we looking to support?

This opportunity is for UAL students across all courses and colleges. Any UAL student is welcome to apply to any of the two spaces, you do not need to be a student at the college of the space you are applying to.

We welcome solo or group shows, installation ideas, performances, research-led projects, screenings, workshop proposals and events. The project proposal does not need to be fully formed, we welcome works in progress and experimental ideas.

So! To our students, take over and own your gallery spaces. These are your spaces, and we cannot wait to see what you do with them!

What is the opportunity?

Arts SU invites applications from UAL students for our Collaborative Residency – an interdisciplinary programme supporting creative collaboration across colleges and courses. The residency creates space for students to work together outside the institutional framework of their studies, encouraging risk-taking, experimentation, and the development of collaborative practices.

10 students will be selected, working together to shape the programme from October 2026 until March 2027. The programme culminates with a presentation of your collaborative work in the SU Project Space at Camberwell College of Arts, Peckham Road in March 2026.

We are looking for students who:

Want to collaborate across disciplines and explore interdisciplinary approaches
Are interested in alternative learning models, inclusive practices and experimental ways of working
Wish to develop their practice through collective exploration and mutual support
Are ready to contribute actively to shaping the programme and supporting their peers
Want to build networks and connections beyond their course community

Node Center for Curatorial Studies are delivering a short course on Exhibition Design.

Arts SU have teamed up with Node Center to offer FREE spaces for three current UAL students. This is an opportunity to build your skills, knowledge, and confidence, helping you take your professional practice to the next level.

Understanding how to work with the architecture of exhibition spaces is essential for effectively communicating a curatorial concept and connecting with audiences.

This online course will equip you with essential tools and knowledge for designing art exhibitions. You'll learn to develop space layouts and work with light, sound, and texture to transform spaces into engaging exhibitions.

Over five weeks, you will discover how to:

Assess and work with conventional and unconventional exhibition spaces
Create mood boards filled with inspiration and references to shape your vision
Design the exhibition layout and artwork display
Work with light, sound, materials and new elements to create unique atmospheres
Ensure your design prioritizes accessibility, safety, and sustainability

This interactive course combines theory with hands-on exercises and inspiring case studies from both art and architecture. You will be introduced to practical skills in technical drawing and paper modelling, along with toolkits, checklists and guidelines that you can use in future projects.

Through weekly assignments and ongoing feedback, you will also have the opportunity to develop your own exhibition design proposal. By the end of the course, you will have the skills and confidence to translate a curatorial concept into an innovative exhibition design. Tailored for curators, designers, architects, or other cultural professionals, this course doesn’t require previous experience in curating, architecture, or art production.

The course is facilitated by Fabiana Dicuonzo

Fabiana Dicuonzo is an Italian architect and curator based in Porto. She is an exhibition designer and consultant for the Italian Ministry of Culture and European cooperation projects, including CoHeN, the first network of museums in towers and lighthouses of the Apulian coast, Italy. With a Masters in Architecture and a Postgraduate Degree in Architectural and Landscape Heritage, Sapienza University of Rome, she is pursuing her doctorate in Museology at the University of Porto (CITCEM). In 2018, she co-founded Profferlo Architecture and Antilia, a travelling curatorial project that regenerates urban spaces through art, architecture and design.

Node Center for Curatorial Studies are delivering a short course on Curating Beyond Exhibitions: Events, Performances, Talks.

While exhibitions remain one of the most common formats to present art, curators and creatives increasingly work through a wider range of public activities such as experimental workshops, performances, and participatory events. In this course, you will experiment with formats that extend the possibilities of curatorial practice.

Taking a practical focus, you will be equipped with the tools to conceptualize and produce a curatorial project from start to finish. Through case studies, short lectures and in-class brainstorming sessions, the cohort will rethink curating as a form of cultural mediation that operates beyond objects, spaces, and conventional exhibition structures. You will also learn from challenges, like where collaborations can go wrong and how to deal with unexpected production issues.

By the end, you will be able to develop proposals for non-traditional curatorial projects including interactive programs, and co-creative productions.

Over five weeks, you will learn how to:

● Conceptualize a variety of curatorial formats (screenings, talks, concerts, performances, workshops)

● Align your project’s aim with its creative outcome

● Work with collaborators and community partners

● Manage the logistics of curatorial events and public programs

● Communicate the curatorial project to various stakeholders (funders, audiences, partners)

● Evaluate the success of your project

This course is for emerging arts professionals who work across formats and sites or who are interested in learning how to curate event-based projects. No prior experience is necessary, but an appreciation for non-traditional arts experiences is a plus.

The course is facilitated by Jess Van Nostrand

Jess Van Nostrand is the Director of Public Engagement & Curatorial Strategies at The Morris Museum in Morristown, New Jersey. She has led numerous curatorial projects, including founding the experimental art center The Project Room (2011-2015). For six years, Jess was Assistant Director of Exhibition Programs & Gallery Initiatives at the Museum of Modern Art, where she worked on innovative public programs that brought new perspectives to exhibitions and the collection. Jess was subsequently Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs for the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, leading the performance-based River To River Festival and directing exhibitions at The Arts Center at Governors Island.
