This event has now sold out. We've added a waiting list in case of last-minute dropouts. If we get a lot of interest, we will look into running this workshop again and will contact those on the waitlist.

Risograph printing combines the ease of a photocopier with the warmth and vibrancy of screen printing. This one day workshop will help you understand more about the process, and how to create riso ready artwork.

Agenda:

- We'll start the workshop with a collaborative two colour print, to help you understand how our two colour risograph machines work.

- After this, you will have time to create your own artwork using a variety of collage materials and drawing tools. You're welcome to bring your own if you desire.

- In the afternoon, we will utilise the riso's built in scanbed to translate your work into a riso print. Four different colour combos will be available for you to choose from, and you'll take home 10 copies of your two-colour risograph print!

Details:

We'll meet in room W237, Floor 2 (in the workshop block, near the Kit Room). The workshop starts at 10:00 am and finishes at 4:30 pm, which includes a 1-hour lunch break. All UAL international students are welcome to book a ticket, regardless of whether you are studying at the London College of Communication. Please just remember to bring your ID card to get through the barriers. No prior knowledge of risograph is required; open to all.

Artist Bio:

Rachel Littlewood is a London based risographer & designer, who has been working with risograph print for over 10 years. Her personal work focuses on her current interests, which at the moment consists of K-pop and Tamagotchis. Her projects also offer opportunities to use risograph colours in interesting combinations and to try out unique halftone patterns.

There is step-free access to Room W237, Floor 2, (in the workshop block, near the Kit Room). Take the first left after going through the barriers, then right into the corridor. A lift should be on your left; take it to floor two and follow the signs to the Kit room. W237 is next to this through the double doors.

Join us in welcoming Kington Graduate Ben Irish as part of the "SANKOFA : From Studio to Industry Relational Networking" Series. You'll build a miniature terrarium and network with like-minded UAL students in the LCC Darkroom Bar.

“I grew up surrounded by plants, forests, and farms and then I moved to London to study graphic design at Kingston University. There I discovered London gardens are rare and even if you pay your landlord's mortgage you can only grow grass. So I started to build terrariums in jars, small ecosystems with their own moss, water cycle, plants and microfauna. I find the process very relaxing and the outcome incredibly rewarding. I wanted to share that feeling so I gifted terrariums to friends and eventually began holding workshops teaching others how to build and care for their own terrariums.” - Benjamin Irish

1.10 pm - 1.40 pm - Hunkyu Kim - Fine Art: Paintings

Artist Bio

Born in 1986 in Seoul, South Korea. Lives and works in London, United Kingdom.

Artist Hun Kyu Kim is known for his allegorical, sentient works that layer complex histories, social issues, and pop culture to create his own fantastical, highly-intricate worlds. Laced with humor and satire, Kim’s detailed depictions of corruption, folly, and the perils of indulgence reveal a critical view of contemporary society. The surreal elements in his paintings—despite their innocent, illustrative quality—often serve to amplify these critiques, creating a striking contrast between the familiar and the grotesque.

Kim, drawing on his extensive background in art restoration and silk painting, and shaped by his South Korean heritage, has forged a distinctive visual language. His art is characterized by the meticulous inking of fine, delicate lines onto silk, a practice rooted in Korean Buddhist traditions and the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392 AD). By reimagining these ancient methods within a contemporary framework, Kim’s work transcends conventional boundaries, transforming his densely-populated creations into enigmatic portals that challenge rational interpretation and encourage contemplation.

1.40 pm - 2.10 pm - Edy Ferguson - Fine Art: Paintings and Music Installations

Born in Chicago and based in London, Edy Ferguson works making both abstract painting and conceptually-driven work which considers the slippages between memory, language, images, symbols and belief. Her projects consider how our sense of truth and reality is affected by fractured narratives in evolving forms of propaganda, the theatrics of conflict, and the staged presentation of credibility.

Ferguson uses interdisciplinary strategies, such as appropriation, collage/de-collage, painting, video, and performance as interventions into documentary modes of display, public address, broadcast, and reception. She transforms archival and forensic systems into supports for poetic gestures. Her work often foregrounds the labor of looking in the searching and sorting of images, finding pattern and meaning in the noise of hyper-information.

She completed her MFA at Hunter College, City of New York, and her BFA at Washington University in St. Louis where she was awarded The Fred Conway Art Award. Since 2019 Ferguson has been lecturing and teaching Contemporary Painting, Sound and Public Art at Xi’an Academy of Art, in Xi'an China.

Artist Bio

Born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Laisul Hoque lives and works in London. Hoque's work explores autotheory through an interdisciplinary approach through installation and films.

Made in collaboration with the communities connected to the narratives explored in his work and informed by intimate conversations, Hoque's work forms an experiential autobiography that opens into a wider collective story.

Drawing from memory and lived experience, he reflects on microhistories and their connections to larger global narratives. After studying literature in Dhaka, he completed an MA in Contemporary Photography; Practices and Philosophy at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London.

An exhibition to celebrate South Asian Heritage Month.

Rooted, Not Rendered is a student-led exhibition presented as part of South Asian Heritage Month at Arts SU, bringing together work from across UAL by Noor Ahmad, Mihad Ali, Ishita Jhunjhunwala, Hafsah Ali Awan, Reeya Rene Rajpal, Sujevan Ravikumar, Ananya Krishna, Anshika Agrawal, Rajlaxmi Rathore, Muhammad Ayan Achakzai and Gauri Srivastava, responding to South Asian identity, memory and diaspora.

The exhibition explores how South Asian histories and lived experiences are often aestheticised, commodified and simplified, and instead creates space for practices that are grounded in lived experience, cultural depth and critical reflection. Through a range of disciplines and approaches, the works on display reflect the complexity and plurality of South Asian identities today.

From personal narratives to collective histories, Rooted, Not Rendered resists singular representation and instead highlights the layered realities of migration, belonging and cultural memory. The exhibition brings together student voices that challenge how identity is framed and invites viewers to engage with work that is rooted, embodied and self-defined.

There will also be a host of South Asian societies sharing artefacts from the culture and space for community! We also have Akankshya Padhi from LCC who will present Pallavi - a visual interpretation of Raag Chayanat through Odissi dance.

'Mosaic of Becoming' brings together works by emerging international artists across the University of the Arts London, whose practices reflect a wide range of cultural, disciplinary and lived experiences. Through a cross-disciplinary selection of artworks, the exhibition explores how identity, culture and creativity intersect within a global learning environment.

The exhibition places particular emphasis on international perspectives, welcoming contributions from across the UAL community. By bringing together students from diverse backgrounds, 'Mosaic of Becoming' highlights how creative expression can act as a shared language through which experiences of transition, connection and transformation are communicated.

Rather than presenting a single narrative, the exhibition creates space for multiple voices to exist together, forming a collective mosaic of creative journeys. Each work offers insight into how students navigate change, negotiate identity and find connection through their creative practice.

Supported by Cass Art. Two exhibiting artists will be selected to receive a £250 Cass Art Materials Bursary to support them in their creative practice.

Organising for Rep Power: Online Skills Development workshop (13/05/2026, 14:30)

This interactive online workshop is a chance to build practical skills in community organising and campaigning in a supportive environment, through discussion, activities and exercises, with no prior experience needed.

The session will be led by Rod O’Donnell (Arts SU's Campaigns and Community Organiser) and supported by Lee Anderson (Arts SU's Education Quality Coordinator) from Arts SU.

The workshop will help you build on the skills you've already developed as a Course Rep, and enable to take them into spaces and communities beyond university, including:

Learning how to turn ideas into action through organising, mobilising and advocacy
Building confidence in communication through one-to-one conversations and relationship-building
Developing teamwork and leadership skills through collective decision-making and negotiation
Understanding how to navigate meetings, influence discussions and represent others effectively

These are the kinds of skills that can serve you well in all kinds of areas, including campaigning, advocacy and social impact work, or any role that involves collaborating with people, communities and driving change.

No preparation is needed. The workshop is FREE and exclusively for Course Reps. After signing up, you’ll receive a Teams link and joining details at least 48 hours before the session.

As part of the Student Basic Needs Project’s ongoing work to make travel and transportation more affordable and accessible for students, we have partnered with Bikeworks to provide FREE Dr Bike Sessions to UAL students. SAVE THE DATE for our last Cycle Safety Event of the 2025-26 academic year from 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM, location to be confirmed soon, where experienced Bikeworks mechanics will conduct a full check of your cycle and carry out minor repairs on site for FREE!

For any repairs that require a bit more work, the mechanics will give detailed advice on exactly what needs fixing and roughly how much it should cost at a local bike shop. The event is open to all UAL students. No registration is required. Just turn up in good time and queue!

Join us for the last Free Food Market of the 2025-26 academic year! Don't worry – this won't be the last time you'll see us. Now overseen by the Student Basic Needs Project, the Free Food Markets are open to all UAL students and are here to support with food and essentials, while also helping reduce the stigma surrounding food insecurity and accessing food support.

Get up to £200 towards your Degree Show Project!

Now overseen by the Student Basic Needs Project, the Degree Show Fund is a financial support scheme designed to help reduce the financial costs associated with producing and exhibiting work for the Degree Show. The Degree Show Fund was originally set up by Arts SU’s Sabbatical Officers, but is now being overseen by the Student Basic Need Project as part of the project’s goal to support students’ access and affordability to art materials. These costs can include materials, printing, and installation. The fund aims to support final-year UAL students who may otherwise face financial barriers to fully visualise and showcase their work. Successful applicants will receive a maximum of £200 reimbursement toward these costs. Check out the work of some of our past Degree Show Fund recipients HERE!

Who can apply:

Applications are open to all UAL students in the FINAL YEAR of their undergraduate or postgraduate studies.

When:

The Degree Show Fund will open on Friday, 17 April at 9:00 am and will be open until Friday, 1 May 11:59 pm.

How You Will be Reimbursed:

UAL final year students can apply via our online form from 17 April to 1 May.
Arts SU will review applications. Successful applicants will be notified via email in 5-10 work days.
Successful applicants are then asked to pay for all the materials, hire fees, and other costs they may need for their projects, AND they must keep all their receipts to get reimbursed.
Successful applicants will be able to submit a form with proof of purchase (receipts), and we will reimburse them with a MAXIMUM of £200 in June.

Advice for Applicants:

The most important part of your application will be explaining your project in detail. We ask you to be as specific as possible about the concept and the purpose of your project. How do you plan on using the funding, and what materials and resources will be required for your project?

Additionally, to align with the SU’s values, we ask that you show how your project shows a commitment to sustainability. Can your materials be reused or re-purposed? How might your work be used again in future exhibitions?

Sign up here to pick up a ‘quilt-at-home kit’ at your campus’s Student Union Office. Create your patch exploring themes of burnout and how you overcome it. Please note that we currently have 27 kits available, and the sign-up form may temporarily pause submissions while we restock, depending on how many students are interested in participating.

We will be in touch to let you know when your kit is ready to collect. Once you’re happy with your patch, drop it back to the office with your name and email address, and we’ll keep you in the loop about the community quilt.

What is in the kit?

A plain coloured piece of fabric measuring 13.5 cm x 37 cm
1 coloured cotton embroidery thread and a needle
A small mix of fabric scraps
A sheet with some ideas and examples of quilting techniques
A return slip and envelope to put your finished patch when finished.

A bit of background...

We’re starting to create a UAL community quilt, inviting students across UAL campuses, regardless of their course, to join in. The idea is for students to create a 13.5 cm x 37 cm, quilt patch, leaving a 1 cm border from your design and the patch edge for sewing purposes.

We want the quilt to explore the theme of burnout and are asking students - How do you overcome burnout?

You don’t have to have all the answers or be amazing at sewing or even make something aesthetically pleasing; it’s a quilt patch for you and a physical process to make a visual reminder of what tools you can use to support your wellbeing. In the spirit of this collaborative endeavour, we’d ask you to give us the patch you make to form a UAL community quilt.

We’re excited to bring this project to life. Once all the patches are returned, we’ll sew them together to create a community quilt. We believe it will serve as a powerful visual resource and a meaningful reminder for students across the university.

Who can Join in?
Any current UAL student, regardless of your course or college, is welcome to attend our workshops or join in with this project! Our quilt-at-home kit can provide all the materials you need to make your quilt patch at home.

We want you to have fun making your patch. If you’d like to experiment, the patch can be made from any material (knitted, felt, paper, old item of clothing, etc. If you prefer to use your own materials, just make sure the patch is the right size (13.5 cm x 37 cm, leaving a 1 cm border).
