Right to Rent

What is ‘Right to Rent’?

In the UK, it is a legal requirement for landlords and letting agents to undertake checks on the immigration status of prospective tenants and anyone else who is named in the rental agreement.

What will my landlord or letting agency look for?

These checks tend to be straightforward and quick. The landlord or letting agent will ask to see original documents that prove you have the right to be in the UK, they will then need to take and retain a copy of these documents.

What if I live in halls?

You won’t need to do this if you’re staying in student halls as they are exempt from this law.

What if my landlord doesn’t ask for this?

If your landlord isn’t asking for this information it may be a warning sign that they are not genuine/legally compliant.
