Recognising and representing the diverse student community at UAL is a fundamental part of our work at Arts SU. Our mission is to understand the inequality and disparities that exist for our students in arts education and wider society so that we can respond. We want our work to provide a voice and platform to marginalised student communities, actively educating and addressing the barriers that exist.

"Rusalka" - Escaping and Subverting the Medical Gaze

MA Costume Design for Performance

This project included a performed costume sequence and several other designs for an interpretation of the opera ""Rusalka"" by Antonín Dvorák. The first act, partially depicted here, is set in a surrealist hospital, exploring issues of chronic illness and the performative subversion and escape from the medical gaze. The restrictive space becomes material costume with performed agency.
