We're looking for creators to design and make trophies, certificates and an in-person awards night video for the Arts Awards 2022 that recognizes the outstanding contributions student and staff have made to the student experience at UAL.  

The annual Arts’ Awards give students the opportunity to recognize the UAL staff who have made all the difference to their experience at UAL. Students nominate the staff who have gone above and beyond for an award, and the winners are selected by a panel, including Course Reps from across UAL. 

We are offering three separate commissions:  
 

  1. Trophies Commission (estimated x24 trophies) : £1200 
  2. Certificate Design : £150 
  3. Awards Night Video : £300  

 These figures are inclusive of both the production budget and the artist’s fee. 

We are looking for students to design these essential parts of the awards want you to design how that will look!

* The commission panel (made up of staff and Student Representatives) will determine the who is selected upon which every entry will receive feedback from the panel. The decision and feedback will be circulated to entrees by Friday 4th February 2022.  

Eligibility: 

This opportunity is open to all current University of the Arts London students.  

We are accepting submissions from individual students. 
*You may submit an entry as two individuals for the trophy design but please be aware this will mean the payment will be split between you both.  
 
You may submit an entry to one, two or all of the trophy design, certificate design, and animation commission.  

Please note that if selected you will need to be registered as self-employed or willing to register in order to be paid for this opportunity. We can also pay you through a company if you have one set up. Please seek advice from HMRC if needed. 

If you are on Tier 4 or Student Route Visa, unfortunately, you cannot apply to this paid opportunity because the UK government states that you cannot be self-employed on a Tier 4 or Student Route Visa. *We will not be able to confirm your contract for the commission until we have a guarantee you can be registered as self-employed.  

What to provide? 

We are not expecting students to spend hours of time creating designs – we are encouraging you to apply with rough designs and concepts that can be developed down the line (if selected).  
 
Trophy Submission – a rough design of the trophy, sustainable materials you would use and costings are recommended. See example of last years selected commission.  
 
Certificate Submission – a rough design for the certficate is recommended.

Video Submission – a submission of a previous video you previously filmed and edited is great, with up to 150 words on how you would like to film and highlight the Arts Awards 2022 event.   

 

The successful applicant will: 

  • Receive recognition from award-winning staff across UAL at the awards ceremony 

  • Gain professional experience of working to a brief and a deadline 

  • Gain professional experience of managing a production budget 

  • Have their work displayed and credited on our social media 

  • Have their work displayed physically across UAL

The Arts’ Awards Trophy 

Specification: 

We will commission an estimated 24 sculptures. Only one design is needed. All trophies should include  “Arts SU/UAL Arts Awards 2022”.   

Your design will be for an object which can fit on a desk unobtrusively, is easily transportable, light and accessible enough to be held comfortably, and made to last. It should not use media that can decompose. 

Please note: we are only looking for designs (rough sketches) at this stage, not completed 3D works. We require delivery of all trophies by Friday 20th May 2022. Please only enter the competition if you are certain that you can make and deliver all 24 trophies by this deadline. The trophies will then be showcased at our online in-person ceremony around the w/c 23rd May 2022.  

The winning trophy proposal will be commissioned and the selected artist/s will be paid £1200 to produce 24 trophies. Payment will be given in two stages: £600 will be given after the proposal is selected to cover material and production costs, and £600 on delivery of the finished works. 

Criteria: 

We are looking for designs of small sculptures that portray excellence in teaching, learning, and knowledge exchange, and staff and students’ commitment to improving students’ experiences. We understand that this is a broad brief, and we encourage you to interpret it as you see fit. Your design should reflect the talent and dedication of the staff and Course Reps to whom they will be awarded. Work made from sustainable materials is favoured.

Certificates Commission  

Specification: 

We are commissioning a design for certificates to award all staff and Course Reps at UAL who receive notable nominations. 

Your entry in this category will be a digital submission of a finished certificate, compatible with Adobe Illustrator. Designs should have a blank space for: the nominee’s name, brief text commendation, Arts SU’s Education Officer’s signature, the Arts Awards logo, Arts SU’s logo and UAL’s logo. You are welcome to include suggestions of fonts which you believe compliment your design. 

The winning certificate designer will be given £150 after we receive an A4 print-ready, high-resolution digital file of the work. All 2D disciplines are welcome to apply. 

Criteria: 

We are looking for a certificate design that will be a pleasure to give and receive to celebrate the hard work, inspiration and insight of the staff and Course Reps to whom the certificate will be awarded. 

We are want a certificate that expresses teaching, learning, and knowledge exchange, and staff and Course Reps’ commitment to improving students’ experiences. We understand that this is a broad brief, and we encourage you to interpret it as you see fit. 

Video Recording Commission 

Specification: 

We are commissioning a student to create a 2 minute showcase video of the Awards ceremony that will be produced shortly after the event . The student will need to be available for the awards ceremony on the w/c 23rd May 2022 in order to film content and interviews for the showcase video. The final copy of the video will need to be edited and produced for release by June 10th 2022.  

The selected student will be given £300 in total: 
£300 by the 24th June 2022 after completion of the video.  
 

Criteria: 

We are looking for a submitted example of a video you have edited and produced. Also accompanying this we ask for up to 150 words on how you would like to highlight and showcase the Arts Awards 2022 Awards Ceremony event . We understand that this is a broad brief, and we encourage you to interpret it as you see fit.
