A more inclusive educational environment, where no-one is left behind!
As Education Officer, I will ensure that the concerns of students from all departments, in every college, are listened to, and acted upon. As UAL students, we have made an investment by choosing to study here; an investment in ourselves, to gain the best education possible, and to feel supported, both as students, and as creative professionals after we graduate. The education process must be inclusive, and progressive, with students recognising that they are not passive observers, but rather active members of a global art discourse.
I will continue to push for the decolonisation of the curriculum, amending reading lists and lecture series, as well as addressing institutional racism at UAL, to make sure that the university is an environment where BAME students can thrive. Having worked through the COVID-19 pandemic, and found ways to learn digitally, I propose that we continue the availability of forms of online delivery: though this must, in no way be seen as a substitute for physical teaching, guest lecturers, and the sense of community instilled by a UAL campus, I believe that this technology will allow us to supplement the university experience, reaching practitioners, and artists from all across the world, and potentially recording lectures, so that all students, regardless of circumstance, have the opportunity to attend.
Having lost my mother this year, I recognise the importance of an effective and compassionate extenuating-circumstances process, and that students facing hardships feel they have the option to, and adequate support to continue their studies, and I see it as my educational duty to take the time to listen to any such concerns. I shall also champion the introduction of further LGBTQ+ visibility in the curriculum, as well as greater accessibility for disabled students, ensuring that everyone is offered the most enriching educational experience possible.
