Manifesto

Candidate for the position of Welfare Officer

Yan Gi Cheng

Hello my name is Yan Gi Cheng and I am here to represent you at UAL. I was an MA Art & Science student at Central Saint Martins and I am happy to take on the responsibilities of Welfare Officer.

I studied BA Fashion Womenswear when the campus was still at Charing Cross Road and I have been able to witness the changes it has had as a student at Kings Cross campus at CSM. As an Asian (Hong Kong), gay and disabled student I have struggled with racism and oppression from both staff and students, and I even considered dropping out in Unit 1 of my degree. Enduring many life hurdles, I suffered from depression, but that is now the past. I would like to now share with the new generation of UAL students ways in which they can empower themselves and overcome life difficulties. I am passionate about making positive changes for the future of UAL especially those who want to improve their mental health and achieve not only good grades but meet some good friends along the way. I am committed to improving the quality of students experience and that justice and equality is acted upon throughout UAL procedures. As a student Rep for my year I am confident in being able to uplift and raise student moral throughout their time at university. As someone who worked as a centre assistant at Triyoga, I want to lobby for a permanent yoga, meditation and mindfulness centre at UAL. A space where students can carve out time in their hectic schedules to take care of their well being. I am passionate and dedicated to make diversity, veganism and sustainability core values for the future. I would like to organise a “Positive Thinking” workshop, at CSM for students to cope with rejection, grief, low motivation or depression during their time at UAL.
