TRANSCESTRY: 10 years of the Museum of Transology

Review of a landmark exhibition exploring the lives of trans, non-binary and intersex people.

Time is running out to experience TRANSCESTRY: 10 Years of the Museum of Transology, an exhibition marking a decade of celebrating the stories and lives of trans, non-binary, and intersex people. Hosted at Central Saint Martins’ Lethaby Gallery, this exhibition features the UK’s largest collection of trans-related objects, and it’s only on until May 11th, 2025. If you haven’t seen it yet, now is the time to make your way to King’s Cross.

Over the past decade, the Museum of Transology has carefully collected more than 1,000 objects donated by individuals from across the UK and Ireland, each item a deeply personal reflection of the diverse experiences of trans people. From protest placards to childhood mementos, the collection gives voice to the resilience and strength that often go unrecognised in mainstream media and museums. Every artefact gives an insight into real, lived experiences that are too often left out of public memory.

These stories can be heard, quite literally, through the access audio tour, which I had the privilege of co-producing with MoT Lates and artist, Ebony Rose Dark, as part of our final-year project at Central Saint Martins. Narrated by the young trans people who donated the artefacts, the tour creates an immersive experience designed to make the exhibition accessible to all. It takes you through a selection of objects with sensory-rich descriptions and first-hand accounts from those at the heart of the collection. This tour is a chance to really connect with the significance behind the items and hear the voices of those who lived these histories.

Aside from the audio tour, the exhibition is full of incredible pieces that offer a window into the lived experiences of trans, non-binary, and intersex people. Among the highlights are Zsarday Forde’s faux-tiger coat, a poignant symbol of Black trans identity and legacy, and intimate objects like a wedding ring that represents the journey to self-acceptance. Whether it’s a prison-issued t-shirt, a denim jacket patched with pride, or ballet slippers worn by a trans man who danced since childhood, each object holds a story, and a life, that adds to the authentic, real, narrative of trans history.

TRANSCESTRY is a living, growing, record of community, identity, and endurance. Visit now to listen, and bear witness to the voices that continue to reshape our understanding of what history looks (and sounds) like. Don’t miss your chance to witness this powerful collection before it closes on the 11th of May.
