Want to make change? Got an Idea?

We've got the tools to make it happen! The Ideas platform is the new interactive way to submit topics for discussion, propose policy, and suggest campaign ideas to improve student life here at Arts.

Idea submissions will be taken to the Student Forums and the Annual Members Meeting

Passed ideas (Arts SU Policy Book):

Passed ideas, either via the Ideas Platform (Your Ideas) or via one of our All-Student Meetings are referred to as SU Policy. This means that it is an objective we must focus on at the SU as mandated by our members (UAL students!). Ideas that are passed will be official SU policy for 3 years.

You can read the full list of previously passed ideas via our SU Policy Book!

    More Sports Space at UAL

    Current
    • Campaigns

What is the current situation? (Background)

UAL has very limited sports space. The Students’ Union only has access to one small studio at High Holborn, and this is not enough to meet the needs of over 100 clubs and societies. Sports teams have to hire and travel to external venues, which is expensive and limits how much time students can train or play. This puts UAL students at a disadvantage compared to other universities, where sports facilities are provided on campus.

It would make a huge difference if UAL could provide dedicated facilities such as a gym, sports hall, football pitches, or even access to a swimming pool. These are the kinds of spaces students regularly use at other universities but currently have little to no access to at UAL.

What will be the impact of your Idea? (Why)

Better access to sports space would make it easier for students to play, train and build communities at UAL. Clubs and societies would be able to train more often without the high cost of external venues, helping them grow and become more sustainable. This would improve student wellbeing and build stronger communities. It would also align UAL with other universities, showing that the arts and sports can thrive together.

What action could Arts SU take to develop your idea? (How)

    - Lobbying UAL for dedicated sports space across campuses.

    - Negotiating more access to existing UAL spaces for clubs and societies.

    - Aim to secure increased funding to invest in a dedicated sports facility.

    - Aim to secure official partnerships with external facilities to give UAL students priority access at affordable rates.

10:39am on 16 Sep 25 Film Society is 100% behind this, it's a no-brainer really. Star Trek figured out that mental and physical health are both equally important back in the 60s. We have a plethora of mental health resources in UAL in 2025 which I'm really thankful for. A boost in physical resources will be a welcome addition.

10:45am on 16 Sep 25 The Volleyball Club fully endorses this! We’ve had so much trouble from training and playing at a gym we rent out. We have trainings cancelled on short notice because our gym often double books.
