Student Elections

In our elections, students can stand to be, and vote for, elected student leaders, some voluntary, and some paid. These representatives are your voice and act on your behalf in the Union, University and wider community fighting for you on an institutional, local and national level.

What are Arts SU Elections?

Arts SU is an independent, democratic organisation (charity) led by students who are elected by our 22,000 members (UAL students). In our elections, students can stand to be, and vote for, elected student leaders, some voluntary, and some paid. These representatives are your voice and act on your behalf in the Union, University and wider community fighting for you on an institutional, local and national level. It is so important for students to take part and vote in these elections so that individuals are elected who represent YOUR views.

What roles are available?

School Rep positions

School Representatives exist to voice the views and interests of students from all courses that sit within their school/department on everything that affects the students’ academic experience. Working with fellow School and Course reps, University staff, and their College Sabbatical Officer to make positive change for students.

You can ONLY stand for a school rep if you study within that school/department!

Sabbatical Officers

The Sabbatical Officer role exists to strengthen the voice of students at UAL. There are 6 different Sabbatical Officer roles: Union Affarirs Officer, Student Communities Officer, CSM Officer, LCC Officer, LCF Officer, and CCW & CCI Officer.

The Sabbatical Officer roles are full-time paid roles.

Arts SU By-Elections 2026

The 2026/27 Arts SU By-Elections is an election where students can stand and vote for vacant school representative roles for the academic year, as well as the UAL Postgraduate Student Governor position.

  • 6 posts are up for election.
  • Nominations close at 12:00 on Friday 30 October 2026 (in 25 days)
  • The polls open at 10:00 on Monday 9 November 2026 (in 5 weeks and 0 days)

If you know someone who might be great at a role, you can give them a bit of encouragement to put themself forward by completing our Recommend a Student form

After you suggest them, we will send them an email letting them know that someone thinks they should stand (don't worry, you do have the option to remain anonymous). This could give someone the encouragement they need!

* When Nominations are open, students can put themselves forward for an available role. During this time, they also produce publicity which includes the ideas and principles of their campaigns to show how they will represent students.
