Art or Algorithm? Exploring UAL students' perspectives on the use of AI in creative education (2025)

Art or Algorithm? is a new research report from Arts SU, exploring how students at University of the Arts London (UAL) view AI’s role in their education and future careers.

Based on qualitative research with UAL students across disciplines (including Fine Art, Fashion, Animation, Photography, and Creative Computing) the report highlights both the opportunities and challenges posed by AI in the creative sector.

Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) Response (2023)

The Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) is a national exercise incentivising improvement and excellence in teaching, learning and student outcomes at universities and colleges. The TEF rates universities and colleges for excellence above a set of minimum requirements for quality and standards, which they must satisfy if they are regulated by the Office for Students (OfS).

The TEF student submission is an opportunity to provide insights about students’ views to help inform the TEF panel’s assessment of the institution.

In the 2022/2023 academic year, Arts SU submitted the student submission report for UAL's Teaching Excellent Framework (TEF) award submission. This report was created by Calum Sherwood (Policy & Research Officer) and Sof Nasif (LCC Officer 2022/23)

Crits and Inclusive Learning (2022)

This paper considers some of the existing academic and practitioner-led literature around crits, articulating some of the problems with inclusivity that can exist within the crit space. It also shares the testimonies of students at UAL that Arts SU have collected, to illustrate the lived experiences of marginalised students who have encountered crits.

This paper was written by Calum Sherwood, Arts SU's Senior Policy and Research Officer.
