Do you like the MCU? Percy Jackson? Harry Potter? Lord of the Rings? Chances are you’ve engaged with ancient mythologies regularly, without ever realising it. In our society, we cherish the origins of these blockbusters and cult classics, diving deeper into the lore of these worlds, and bringing them back to life. Come celebrate with us! Festivals like Yuletide and Ostara offer a chance to try new books, movies, and video games, and meet new people with similar interests.
The Classics and Pagan Society at UAL seeks to provide a multicultural, academic and social environment to students who harbour an interest in classical studies and literature, pagan religions, world mythologies and any and all modern/contemporary media that emerges from these realms. This encompasses a wide range of interests, including but not limited to Ancient plays, Shakespearean literature, superhero comic books, musicals, and even film.
The society is a community-driven space, putting networking and socialising before expertise or knowledge, seeking to minimise the learning curve or entry barrier faced by some individuals when tackling more formal academic concepts such as Epic poetry or Ancient philosophy. The society is also a learning space. Students who already have a nestled interest in modern concepts such as superheroes or science fiction can build upon existing limited knowledge of myths and classics to move towards more academic mediums with the help of peers they may make in society. Events at the society may range from movie nights, book readings, and gallery visits to festive celebrations such as Samhain (Halloween) or Yule (Christmas).
