Overview

Join us in welcoming CSM Graduate Monica and Melody Akaji as part of the "SANKOFA : From Studio to Industry Relational Networking" Series.

The SANKOFA Programme seeks to connect our Alumni, with current students, to deepen their sense of being part of the UAL Networking community. It also seeks to ensure that both our students and Alumni feel supported to both live, and build their best possible creative ambitions in real time.

Monica and Melody will be discussing the benefit of staying true to who you are and showing up authentically, especially in academic institutions.

Monica Okello is an artist and designer developing a process-led, multidisciplinary practice, currently working across image, print and moving image, with hopes of firmly moving into installation. Monica is interested in archives of all kinds: her family archives, the Black archive, and the Black diasporic archive. She is interested in Black people’s relationship to memory, the gaps within the archive, and who gets to be highlighted in the history books. Monica is currently a Visiting Practitioner at Central Saint Martins and is doing on the Black Makers and Designers Residency at Makerversity, situated in Somerset House

Melody Akanji is a spatial and curatorial practitioner working across architecture, contemporary art and archives. Her research explores site, memory and time through sound, offering reflections on sonic architectures and invisible monuments. She has a strong background in community engagement, public participation and curatorial research. She will be continuing her architectural studies at the RCA in September. She is currently the Co-ordinator of the Croydon Urban Room.
