Overview

The Chalceia festival (the festival of Bronze-workers) was a religious festival devoted to the goddess Athena and the god Hephaestus. It was celebrated on the last day of Pyanepsion (October or November in the Attic calendar). The festival celebrated Athena and Hephaestus, in honour of both gods as patron deities of Athens, and as deities of handicrafts. Every year, on the day of the festival, the priestesses of Athena Polias would ritualistically set up a loom to make a sacred peplos (robe) to be offered to the goddess.

In honour of the festival, the Classics and Pagan Society will be hosting a crafts session dedicated to creating personal accessories to be worn, including bracelets, necklaces, and the like. Students are encouraged to engage with the theme and make works centred around the concepts of Greek culture, Bronze-working and and the gods associated with the festival! The event would involve working with store-bought craft kits and students are free to make crafts of their choice.
