AMM 2023: What happened?

On Wednesday 22nd November 2023, 5pm – 6:30pm, we held our Annual Members Meeting (AMM). This meeting provides an opportunity to know what the Union has been doing, and for all UAL students (SU Membership) to direct and question how the SU represents you at the University of the Arts London.

As an independent organisation to the University, we exist to represent your interests, give independent advice, and provide opportunities for you to socialise and develop your creative practice.

Full Minutes of the meeting are available here.

The meeting was not quorate as less than 100 students attended, meaning that idea submissions were not voted on. This means that ideas with less than 100 votes will be deferred to the next Student Forum in February 2024. You can check out what ideas students have submitted here.

  1. Officer Priorities 2024:

The Full Time Sabbatical Officers outlined their priorities for the academic year:

  • Cost of Living Crisis
  • Equity through representation
  • Inclusivity and accessibility in education
  • Community Building

The priorities were followed by a Q&A with the officer team, which are available in the minutes.

  1. Idea Update: Keep Holborn Open until 10PM:

This received 100+ votes online, submitted by students who regularly use the activity spaces at High Holborn. UAL shared that they are changing the opening hours, and will close the campus at 7PM due to financial and sustainable reasons.

The University has not changed their stance on the issue, but have chosen to fund for external spaces for student groups.

The SU and Officer team are continuing to advocate for UAL to provide a replacement for the loss of the activity spaces.

  1. 24Hr or Extended Library hours before hand-in

(note: this was submitted twice, by two different students.)

No voting took place on this issue as there was not enough students present. Deferred to Student Forum unless it reaches 100+ votes online.

  1. Any other business

AOB notes are available in the minutes.

Discussions took place around support to welcome international students, connecting with students from similar backgrounds, and issues with the SU website.

  1. Dates for your diary:

Focus groups – lead by the SU Student Research Interns (paid student staff who research into the experiences of students) – continuing until 29th January.

Arts SU Elections (All full and part time roles available): Standing opens on the 15th January 2024.

Join Arts SU in February 2024 for our next Student Forum!
