Ayon Ghosh, CSM Sabbatical Officer – Term 1 25/26 Highlights

 

Achievements (Things I’ve Achieved So Far)

Graduation Advocacy: Successfully campaigned on student concerns regarding post graduation date changes; communicated outcomes positively to students.

Event Coordination: Supported student societies and events, liaising with staff for quicker and more sustainable space approvals.

Student Communication: Responded to student concerns (e.g., building temperature issues at CSM); ensured student voices are raised with staff.

Faith & Inclusion: Advocated for a permanent multi-faith prayer space and increased staff awareness of its importance.

Global Issues Advocacy: Followed up with UAL on their stance on Palestine, keeping students informed.

Freedom of Expression Steering Group: Participated in discussions with staff to support student freedoms.

 

Ongoing & Term 2-3 Focus (Things I’m Currently Working On)

Technical & Digital Skills Support: Expanding CAD and media skills workshops, especially for 1st-year architecture students without media tutors.

Student Activism & Engagement: Building stronger connections with student groups to better communicate their demands (e.g., ethical divestment) to the university.

Cultural & Social Events: Planning to increase cultural events at CSM to boost student participation and representation.

 

Areas to Develop / Long-Term Plans

Freedom of Expression Impact: Moving beyond presence to create tangible change within the Steering Group.

Expanded Technical & Cultural Support: Implementing more hands-on digital lessons and events in Term 2 and 3, forming part of a long-term strategy for future years.

Strategic Student Engagement: Developing ongoing connections with activist and interest groups to influence university policies.

Carbon Literacy Day of Action

Back in November, 2024 Arts SU invited Central Saint Martins MA Innovation Management student Natsumi Matsuoka to attend Carbon Literacy Training, hosted as part of an international day of action at Central Saint Martins. The training is part of a wider roll out spearheaded by UAL’s new Climate and Net Zero training programme, which works across UAL to recontextualise Carbon Literacy for UAL's multiple subject disciplines.
