We represented your views to the Department for Transport in their consultation on an integrated national transport strategy.
Arts Students' Union (Arts SU) has submitted its response to the Department of Transport (DfT), in their consultation on an Integrated National Transport Strategy.
DfT have said that their strategy "will set out a single national vision which will put people who use transport and their needs at its heart and empower local leaders to deliver integrated transport solutions that meet the needs of their local communities". They're asking for opinions from people across England about using transport and what could make it better, to form the final version of the strategy. It'll be implemented for the next 10 years in England.
Using your responses from our research into UAL students' experiences of transport and commuting to University, we've made a series of recommendations to the Government:
- Better coordination between National Rail and TfL services
- More seamless ticketing systems, and expanding the Oyster card zone out into areas like Essex, Hertfordshire, and Surrey
- Offering regional student discounts to bring down costs for commuting students
- Sharing real-time data and utilising analytics effectively to offer more frequent services at busy times, and allowing students to predict the best times to travel
- Introducing apps with integrated travel information across networks, and busyness predictors so students can transport art and projects
- Introducing location-sharing services with emergency GPS trackers, to make travelling at night feel safer
- Being able to report incidents quickly to the right authorities, even when underground
- Creating advisory boards with Universities and Students' Unions so student voices can be considered at all stages
- Offering a free, student-specific discount card to ensure equitable access to education
