We've got the tools to make it happen! The Ideas platform is the new interactive way to submit topics for discussion, propose policy, and suggest campaign ideas to improve student life here at Arts.

Idea submissions will be taken to the Student Forums and the Annual Members Meeting

Passed ideas (Arts SU Policy Book):

Passed ideas, either via the Ideas Platform (Your Ideas) or via one of our All-Student Meetings are referred to as SU Policy. This means that it is an objective we must focus on at the SU as mandated by our members (UAL students!). Ideas that are passed will be official SU policy for 3 years.

You can read the full list of previously passed ideas via our SU Policy Book!

    Foundation Students in Sports

    Current

What is the current situation? (Background)

Foundation students at UAL currently aren’t given the same consideration as undergraduates when it comes to BUCS Wednesdays. While most undergraduate courses are scheduled with BUCS in mind—either keeping Wednesdays free or allowing students to miss class for matches—foundation timetables don’t take this into account. As a result, foundation students are often left to choose between attending class or representing the university in sport.

What will be the impact of your Idea? (Why)

This lack of consideration can be disheartening and exclusionary. Many foundation students are just as eager to participate in sports, build community, and represent UAL, but are unable to do so because their academic schedule doesn’t accommodate it. It creates an unnecessary barrier to getting involved, and makes foundation students feel like they’re not seen as a full part of the student body when it comes to extracurricular life.

What action could Arts SU take to develop your idea? (How)

The SU can work with course leaders and the admin team to make sure foundation students are given the same flexibility and support as everyone else. Whether that means adjusting timetables or formally recognising BUCS as a valid reason to be excused from class, your vote helps push for a more inclusive and fair experience.

11:25am on 22 Apr 25 I agree! We should make sure all UAL students, pre degree, undergrad and postgrad are treated with equal respect and rights!

11:42am on 24 Apr 25 Foundation students deserve the same respect as undergraduates—it's unacceptable that they're being penalized for representing the university. UAL’s support for student athletes is already insufficient, and limiting matches to one day a week is the bare minimum. We’re balancing academics, training, and competition, yet the institution continues to make it harder instead of helping.
