Zine & Comic Book Workshop

In collaboration with the Cartoon Museum

Date Sunday 19 November 2023

Time noon - 2pm

Location The Cartoon Museum, 63 Wells St, London W1A 3AE

Overview

Lots of comic creators got started by making zines - or 'mini-comics'. Learn how to create your own characters and draw them into a special booklet that you'll easily be able to make copies of to sell or simply share information on something fun or important to you. This workshop will be run by a professional comic artist with over 30 years experience in teaching art to all ages as well as backgrounds. With a particular skill and interest in working with neurodiverse, disabled students and well as those wanting to make works on mental health issues. You will be supported in creating a zine that can tackle any topic in a way that will make sence and share on paper the ideas you have in your head.

As well as making your own zine, you will also have a chance to look around The Cartoon Museum to get inspiration and see how comic artists tackle a variety of topics including, comedy, identity and politically complex topics. In the shop you will see the types of zines that are sold, many of which are about the artist's identity.

Although this event is free, capacity is limited and we advise you book to guarantee attendance.

We would also like to offer reasonable travel reimbursement for ALL the attending UAL students; We recognise weekend travel to external spaces during the cost-of-living crisis can be a barrier for some students, and hope this will mean everyone who wants to attend can do so. Instructions to access the refund will be sent to attendees during and after the event.

Access - This is a step free event. The Cartoon Musuem is fully wheelchair accessible.

The facilitator leading the workshop also has experience teaching those with Autism and other learning differences. Steve is a comic artist with over 30 years experience. He also has over 30 years of experience working with young people, including the last two years working on the Cartoon Museum's award winning Autism projects, where in part he works without Young Cartoonist in Residence to teach them cartooning skills, as well as opening up the cartoon world to people from diverse backgrounds.

Although not exclusively for disabled students, we hope this will be a welcoming environment and if you need any further information or access requirements please do email us: artsprogramme@su.arts.ac.uk.
