Key dates

Application Deadline: Sunday 28th April, Midnight

Responses Sent: Friday 10th May 2024

What is the opportunity?

We are looking for artworks, research, designs and projects from UAL students and recent graduates for a public group exhibition happening in June 2024, which will focus on student living conditions in the private rental sector.

This exhibition builds on the research carried out in Arts SU’s Private Renters ReportThis link will open in a new tab, which highlighted the conditions students at UAL are living amongst, and generated discussion about how both the University and the Students’ Union can support students who are balancing the priorities of their studies, with a high-cost yet low-quality private rental market.

We believe this exhibition will connect with communities to see the common ground and actions that can be taken as a collective. We want to showcase student experiences, amplify their voices regarding their living conditions and the effect it has on their overall studies and mental health, and gain interest for the recommendations put forward in the Private Renters Report.

Who are we looking to support?

This opportunity is open to UAL students and recent graduates across all courses and colleges, whose work resonates with this theme and research.

We are open to all applications that demonstrate an interest in housing issues. However, we are particularly interested in finished pieces of works that respond to the following themes:

  • Responses to Guardianships, tenants’ rights and invasion

  • How poor housing conditions can impact on health

  • Responses to space & how this affects students making work, storage, keeping artworks, making new works

  • Art & gentrification – demonisation of art students/ artists

  • Utopian ideals – what could student living look like?

Applicant Information

  • This opportunity is specifically for students & recent graduates of UAL. While the private rental market in London is a beast far bigger than both UAL and Arts SU, with problems that require powers far beyond both to resolve, we as partners have a responsibility to our students and members to support their studies in any way we can.

  • We are open to alternative means of application / application submission, e.g., presented as a recorded video or audio submission. Please email artsprogramme@su.arts.ac.ukThis link will open in a new tab if you would like to apply this way.

  • Applications are viewed by a panel comprising of Arts SU representatives and an independent external panellist. This panel will include Aisling Ward (Exhibitions Coordinator, Arts SU), Calum Sherwood (Senior Policy and Research Officer, Arts SU) & Avril Corroon (Artist).

  • If you have access requirements that you would like to discuss or want to request more information, please contact artsprogramme@su.arts.ac.ukThis link will open in a new tab
