South Asian Heritage Month

South Asian Heritage Month is back at Arts Students' Union from 18th July - 17th August!

Our South Asian Heritage Month celebrations have returned for 2024!

South Asian Heritage Month 2024 kicks off in:

What is South Asian Heritage Month?

South Asian Heritage Month runs from 18th July to 17th August, and was set up in 2019 to recognise and spotlight the achievements, lived experiences, and people who are part of South Asian communities in the UK.

South Asia consists of 8 countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. There’s also South Asian diaspora (communities from South Asian countries who live outside of South Asia) across the world, from the UK to the Caribbean and beyond.

The timing of the month ends with the anniversary of Partition. This refers to when the Indian Independence ActThis link will open in a new tab received royal assent from King George VI on 18 July 1947, and the Radcliffe Line, which divides India, West Pakistan, and East Pakistan, was published on 17 August, by Cyril Radcliffe.

2024 marks Arts SU’s second celebration of South Asian Heritage Month, after our celebrations were set up in 2023 by London College of Communication Sabbatical Officer Sof Nasif.

What's this year's theme?

2024’s theme is Free to be Me. This year’s theme is about embracing who we are, sharing our similarities, and honouring our differences. Free to be Me encourages us to celebrate our unique identities as students of South Asian heritage at UAL, and be proud of who we are.

How are we celebrating South Asian Heritage Month?

We’re running an exhibition this summer at the London College of Communication Typo Café Windows – from 15th July to the 18th August! We’re delighted to have work from 9 UAL students displayed as part of our South Asian Heritage Month celebrations this year, based on the theme Free to be Me

Our Communities Officer, Sayali Waghmare, and our CSM Officer, Zainab Goriwala, are also working on a series of events - more information to come soon!
