Recognising and representing the diverse student community at UAL is a fundamental part of our work at Arts SU. Our mission is to understand the inequality and disparities that exist for our students in arts education and wider society so that we can respond. We want our work to provide a voice and platform to marginalised student communities, actively educating and addressing the barriers that exist.

Unmasking the Complexities of Masking in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): A Personal Exploration.

This project delves into the profound significance of masking in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), far beyond its role as a coping mechanism. It symbolizes a constant struggle between concealing one's authentic autistic identity and the burden of shame perpetuated by misconceptions. The narrative begins with a personal exploration, acknowledging the discomfort that often accompanies disclosure. The masking behavior is not merely an adaptation; it exacts a toll on mental health, especially for those diagnosed later in life. The work unveils the misrepresentations of ASD in mainstream culture and delves into the positive contributions of individuals with ASD, shedding light on their unique journeys of self-acceptance. Drawing inspiration from Greek tragedy, psychology, archetypes, philosophy, and film, it explores the multifaceted nature of masking, revealing the inherent complexity of the autistic mind. Ultimately, it aims to foster a deeper understanding of ASD and dismantle stereotypes using humor, advocating for a more inclusive and empathetic society.
